Local water quality

The Town of Swepsonville is located in the Upper Cape Fear River Basin and the B. Everett Jordan Reservoir watershed. The Town is bounded on the west by the Haw River. The NC Division of Water Quality, in the 2005 Cape Fear River Basinwide Water Quality Plan, has rated this reach of the Haw River as Supporting Aquatic Life but Not Rated for Recreation because the fecal coliform bacteria screening criteria were exceeded. The entire Haw River watershed has also been classified as a Nutrient Sensitive Water, which means it needs additional nutrient management because the River is subject to excessive growth of aquatic vegetation.
